A marathon day for charity as Bath Half runners raise thousands of pounds

Charities had a bumper day in Bath today as runners took to the streets determined to raise as much as possible for their causes. This year's lead charity was CoppaFeel, while the Teenage Cancer Trust was chosen as the featured appeal, the fun run supported Newton St Loe-based aid charity Send a Cow, and the local charity was the Camerton-based National Osteoporosis Society. Many local charities were also involved, including The Hoskins Foundation, set up in memory of Matt Hoskins, who died in August last year after being diagnosed with a brain tumour, to raise money for the RUH and families affected by such conditions. Around 25 people including former Bath Rugby player Lewis Moody ran for the charity and have raised around £2,000 so far. Lewis said: "It's great to be here, it's for such a good cause - I'm just pleased to be able to support the charity." Charlotte Adcock, from Bradford-on-Avon, did the fun-run with Matt's daughter Freya, 21 months, to support the charity and the family, who marked his birthday on the day of the marathon. Charlotte, who is Freya's god-mother, said: "We wanted to all be together today, it was something special we felt we wanted to do, something to mark today and pay an emotional tribute to Matt." John Carter, chair of the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group, says the charity has raised around £6,000 through its 23 runners. "We are so pleased," he said. "We had tremendous support, things like this give us a big lift and we are delighted to be have been part of the Bath Half 2014." Ali Jennings, communications manager for the National Osteoporosis Society said: "We are delighted to be the featured local charity. We work nationally of course but we were born in Bath and our heart is very much in Bath. "We have 18 runners here for us, the most we've ever had, and all of them have a connection with osteoporosis. This year is very exciting for us." Kris Hallenga of breast cancer charity CoppaFeel!, the event's lead charity, spent the day supporting around 200 runners. She said: "It's such an exciting event. This is the second year we've been lead charity and we were asked to do it so that's really nice. As well as raising lot of money – it's the biggest fundraiser for us – it's also shouting about boobs really loudly and raising awareness."
