People will be able to find out more about the possible reopening of Saltford railway station at an event next month. The drop-in consultation session will be taking place as experts investigate the detailed logistics of bringing the station, which closed in 1970, back into use. The event, which is open to all local residents, is taking place on Tuesday February 25 from 4pm to 8pm in the Avon Room of Saltford Hall. Bath and North East Somerset Council is acting as official promoter of the station reopening project and its transport officers will be at the event to answer questions about possible costs, the impact on local roads and parking, and how the scheme might be taken forward. B&NES councillor Francine Haeberling (Con, Saltford) said: "We welcome the fact that B&NES is holding a consultation on the idea of reopening Saltford's railway station, something we first called for over a year ago. "Reopening a closed train station is a complex and lengthy process, so it's vital that residents have a say in the matter at the earliest possible stage. "I would therefore urge local residents to come along to this event, gather information about the plans and give their views. It will also be an opportunity for the council to ascertain what the level of usage would be and take on board any local concerns." The consultation is taking place as the idea of more regular metro-style services between Bath and Bristol is being explored. Saltford Station Campaign leader Chris Warren said: "I am delighted that the consultation event is taking place. This is one more step forward towards the reopening of the station. It would be crazy for half-hourly Metro West services to pass through Saltford without stopping." Initial studies by consulting engineers Halcrow have provided enough evidence for B&NES to commit up to £100,000 to undertake a high level option assessment project, which could see the station put forward in a bid for Government investment. Reopening the station could cost around £5.5 million, with a suggestion that it could generate new income of up to £250,000 a year. Saltford Parish Council supports the reopening, although its says concerns from residents over subjects such as traffic need to be addressed.
