Norton Hill School student Archie Matthews has been selected for the Bath Primary Schools' FA District Schools' Team to represent Bath & North East Somerset and Wiltshire in this year's competition.
The BPSFA was founded in 2003 to fulfill two functions. Firstly, the association was to provide football for all through the organisation of inter school competitions and coaching opportunities for teachers. Secondly, the association aimed to create a 'best with best' scenario so that the players showing potential could train together and push each other to reach even higher standards. These opportunities are provided without cost to the participants and as such the association relies on the generosity of volunteers and donors.
The talented Year 8 student was selected from a large number of boys from across the region who attended the trials this month. At the trials, Archie had to play a series of matches and complete two written tasks as part of the application process. After a nail biting selection process, against some extremely talented individuals, Archie was chosen, much to his joy. Other students from Norton Hill School are currently involved in the trials, and like Archie, they too are waiting to hear if they've been selected to join the squad.
Archie was asked about how he felt about being chosen. Archie commented; "When I was told about being selected, I was really happy. I'm really looking forward to playing as part of the team in the very near future."
The squad will receive a free coaching programme based in Keynsham and will then represent Norton Hill and the district against other school district sides. The lucky students will also have the opportunity to compete in tournaments in Holland, Sweden and Germany. Archie is already preparing to travel abroad for two tours in Belgium and will later in the year be travelling to Sweden to take part in the Gothia Cup as part of the World Youth Tournament, which will be a truly an international football experience for him, being pitched face to face against other teams from all around the World!
