Trowbridge's John Jackson piloted Great Britain's four-man bobsleigh team to second place at the European Championships in Germany today. The team, based at the University of Bath, became the first British quartet to win a European bobsleigh medal in 20 years. Joel Fearon, Stuart Benson and Bruce Tasker completed the line-up as Team GB finished fourth overall at the event, which doubled up as the final pre-Olympic World Cup race, but second of the European countries. "It's a great result to send us to Sochi," GB Bobsleigh performance director Gary Anderson told BBC Sport. "There is still much more to come from this crew. "We made subtle changes in technology that we will look at and analyse the impact of ahead of the Games." The race was won by USA in a combined time of 1min 38.54secs, with Switzerland second and Canada third. Britain were just 0.01 seconds behind the Canadians. It is the second historic result for the team this season after they secured World Cup silver in Lake Placid in December. Jackson ruptured his Achilles in July and astounded medical experts by returning to competition in November. The Winter Olympics begin on February 7.
