Bath Rugby's Anthony Watson scored the only try for England Saxons as they fell to a disappointing 14-8 defeat against Ireland Wolfhounds at Kingsholm this evening.
Former Bath Academy member and Beechen Cliff pupil Freddie Burns, now at Gloucester, added a penalty, but Ireland scored two converted tries through scrum-half Isaac Boss and ten Ian Madigan.
Boss' touchdown, converted by Madigan, put Wolfhounds ahead after five minutes and it took Saxons until midway through the first half to respond.
Winger Watson pounced on an Irish error, capitalising when the ball ricocheted off Darren Cave's chest before accelerating away from 50 metres to score.
Burns' conversion hit the post and Wolfhounds pulled further clear by producing another piece of quick-witted work on the half-hour. Madigan's tap penalty was followed by a twist over the line and the fly-half converted to help his side into a 14-5 lead at the break.
Bath prop Nathan Catt came on as a second-half replacement for Saxons but all they had to show for their efforts was a Burns penalty as Wolfhounds comfortably saw the game out.
