Lizzy Yarnold claims another Skeleton World Cup gold in Igls, Austria

Bath's Lizzy Yarnold all but wrapped up the FIBT World Cup title for 2013-14 after winning her fourth gold of the season in Igls, Austria this afternoon. The 25-year-old, whose place in the TeamGB squad for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics will be confirmed on Wednesday, produced two impressive runs to beat American rival Noelle Pikus-Pace. Yarnold, who trains with British Skeleton at the University of Bath, clocked 54.63secs to lead after the first run, then replicated her fine form to set a winning time of 1mins 49.04secs. World champion Shelley Rudman, who used the meeting to experiment with settings ahead of Sochi, was joint seventh after the first run in 55.05. It looked like she was off the pace again in the second run but found tremendous speed in the latter stages, hitting 120kmh as she clocked 54.77 for fifth overall. Rose McGrandle, in her third World Cup event, had a bumpy first run but was much better next time down and improved by three-tenths of a second to clock 55.12 and place 14th overall. The final World Cup meeting of 2013-14 takes place in Konigssee, Germany next week and Yarnold has a 225-point lead in the World Cup rankings, meaning she only has to finish to take top spot overall.
