Flood warnings across the South West as Bath's wet weekend continues

People in Bath are preparing for another day of rain as the Environment Agency warns that there is still risk of flooding across the South West. The weather forecast in the city for today looks very wet, with heavy rain expected throughout this afternoon and into tonight. Avon Fire and Rescue has said it has been called out to a number of minor flooding incidents across the Bath area and is urging people to stay away from flood water. A spokesman said they wanted to get a public safety message out that people should not walk down near the rivers because it was not safe. There are 45 flood warnings across the South West, with coastal areas and the Severn estuary most at risk. River levels across the region, including the River Avon, are expected to continue rising. Teams from the Environment Agency have been working around the clock to check and maintain flood defences, clear blockages in watercourses, monitor water levels and issuing flood warnings. Last night they said that a total of 153 properties had flooded, 85 of which were from coastal flooding. Jonathan Day, flood risk manager at the Environment Agency, said: "The risk of flooding to the coast will continue over the next few days, especially on the south and west coast and along the Severn estuary. "In addition, wet conditions have left the ground saturated in many areas, increasing the risk of river and surface water flooding. "We would urge people to be prepared by checking their flood risk, signing up to free flood warnings and keeping an eye on the latest flood updates via the EA website and Twitter. "We have protected over 200,000 properties across the country over the past 48 hours, and the Environment Agency will continue to work around the clock to protect communities." Environment Secretary Owen Paterson has said the Government is continuing to monitor the situation. He said: The worst of the bad weather is not yet over, so I've chaired an emergency meeting of all departments involved to make sure that preparations to respond are in hand." He added: "I'd like to thank the Environment Agency, local councils, public utilities and emergency services who have worked tirelessly over the past week."
