Christmas sales begin in Bath

Bath shoppers are eagerly preparing themselves for the annual sales when many retailers across the city will slash prices. With high street chains and department stores opening today with their Boxing Day sales many of Bath's independent retailers are waiting until tomorrow before revealing their offers. A small band of dedicated bargain hunters are expected to sleep outside furniture store Silcox, Son and Wicks on Kingsmead Square tonight in anticipation of its famous sale which will see hundreds of pounds taken off stock. The family firm has already confirmed that some price tags have been reduced by more than 80 per cent. In a break with tradition Silcox, Son and Wicks will open at 10am tomorrow. Owner of furniture store TR Hayes, Derek Hayes, said the post-Christmas sale, which will last throughout January, was a good chance to clear stock ready for new lines. He said some items would be reduced by 50 per cent when the showroom opens tomorrow at 8.45am. "This will be our 98th January sale since moving to Bath in 1915. The shop of that time has gradually got bigger and now has more than 50,000 square feet employing 54 staff. "This is the first sale that will include our new showroom the Colonnade, which will allow us to exhibit a lot more contemporary stock." Department store Rossiters will be offering deals on all of its furniture, wallpaper and fabrics too. Bath shoppers will also be able to grab a bargain in the final few days of the city's BhS store's closing down sale, which began last week. The department store is closing in the coming weeks to make way for discount clothing chain Primark.
