Anyone driving home for Christmas in the next few days can expect delays and disruption to their journeys because of stormy weather. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Monday, December 23 and into Christmas Eve because of high winds and heavy rain. Gales with gusts up to 70 miles an hour are expected for much of the west coast especially in Scotland, Northern Ireland, west Wales and northwest England. Central and eastern areas of England will see lesser wind gusts. Heavy rain is also expected in southern parts of England and south Wales with the risk of localised flooding. The Met Office has said members of the public should be prepared for significant disruption to travel. The Highways Agency has said drivers of high-sided vehicles, riding motorcycles or towing caravans should check traffic and weather conditions before setting out. Head of on-road services at the Highways Agency, John McTaggart, said the organisation was working closely with the Met Office. "Road users are urged to check traffic and weather conditions before setting out on journeys and to heed any advice such as speed restrictions once they are on the strategic road network. "Be aware of sudden gusts of wind, and give high-sided vehicles, caravans, motorbikes and bicycles plenty of space. In the event of persistent high winds we may need to close certain bridges to traffic for a period, so please be alert for warnings of closures and follow the clearly signed diversion routes." Drivers are being advised to avoid the two Severn Crossings and the M5 between junctions 18, for Avonmouth, and junction 23, for Bridgwater during the bad weather.
