Bath rescue centre's bid to stop rabbits breeding like..... rabbits

A woman from Bath is on a mission to stop rabbits doing what they are most famous for. Rabbit rescue shelter founder Michelle Amanatullah corr staged an awareness and fundraising day at a city petshop today about what she calls one of Britain's most overbred animals. The 37-year-old started taking in rabbits at her home in Twerton in March last year, partly as therapy for her 11-year-old daughter, who has autism and does not speak. She was selling cakes and raffle tickets at Not Just Pets in St James's Parade to raise money for Bath Bunny Rescue - and particularly the costs of neutering rabbits. Getting an animal ready to be rehomed can cost as much as £60. Michelle, who before the birth of her daughter worked in the elderly care sector, has around 25 rabbits under her care at any one time, with some boarding while their owners are on holiday. Others come her way because owners have mistakenly bought a female instead of a male, or because of changes in people's circumstances. Her work is entirely self-funded, although a local vet offers her a reduced rate for speying and neutering. She said: "They are pregnant for 30 days. Then as soon as they have given birth, they get pregnant and it all starts again. "We are busier than ever." She says many of the problems stem from free-to-collect rabbits offered on sites such as Facebook. To get advice and information, click here Today's event goes on until 3pm.
