Widcombe Parade could have its one-way system reversed under new plans designed to be make the shopping area safer for pedestrians and cyclists. This weekend plans will go on display showing the changes, which also include a new set of traffic lights at the junction of Rossiter Road and Pulteney Road and a double mini roundabout at the junction of Widcombe Parade with Widcombe Hill and Prior Park Road. Under the proposals traffic will be able to access Widcombe Parade, Prior Park Road and Widcombe Hill from a controlled junction at the west end of Widcombe Parade, and smaller vehicles, travelling eastbound on Rossiter Road will be permitted to make a right turn into Lyncombe Hill. The aim of the proposed changes is to take through traffic, including HGVs, away from Widcombe Parade. Chairman of the Widcombe Association, Paddy Doyle, said after more than 30 years of campaigning locals were pleased something was finally being done. "The council have put forward some very attractive proposals that will have huge benefits for all who use Widcombe village centre. I urge everyone who has an interest in improving the environment of the Parade to visit the exhibition and see for themselves what is proposed." Cabinet member for transport, Councillor Caroline Roberts (Lib-Dem, Newbridge), said the council had worked with both the Widcombe Association and traders to create the scheme. "What people can expect on Widcombe Parade is low traffic speeds, new crossings, high quality paving materials, improved parking and delivery arrangements together with two-way cycle access on the carriageway eastbound and a contra flow cycle lane to provide two-way cycling as part of a widened footway westbound. A landmark tree will also be put in place at the end of the Parade, close to the Halfpenny Bridge." The exhibition is being held at the Natural Theatre Studio, Widcombe Hill opposite St. Matthews Church between 2pm and 7pm on Saturday. The proposals will also be on the council's website from Friday. Visit www.bathnes.gov.uk/widcombescheme from then.
