Video: Chaos on the trains leaves huge queue of frustrated travellers outside Bath Spa Station

Frustrated commuters were left stranded in a huge queue outside Bath Spa Station tonight after train services to and from London were either delayed or cancelled. Rail staff were at first attempting to arrange taxis to help ease the congestion thought to be have been caused by not one, but two problems on the rail network. At one stage the queue of at least 200 people stretched back down Dorchester Street to the bus station. It was hoped that a replacement bus service could be put into operation to help get stranded passengers home. First Great Western first tweeted that they were dealing with an incident at Ealing Broadway and warning delays of at least 20 minutes. Later, the company Twitter feed warned of signalling problems at Swindon which added to the chaos. The 17.00 pm to Weston-super-Mare was running 83 minutes late and the 18.29 to Bristol Temple Meads at least six minutes late. Passengers heading to Taunton on the 18.00 service were left with the simple message "delayed". The 18.36 to Cardiff was expected just two minutes late with 18.59 at this stage running 13 minutes behind schedule. Passengers on the 19.24 to Bristol Temple Meads can expect delays of at least 15 minutes while the 19.30 to the same destination has been cancelled. The 19.36 to Cardiff Central is reported to be running 10 minutes late. One glimmer of light for commuters was the 19.08 to Cheltenham Spa seemed to be unaffected by the disruption and was running on time. National Rail Enquiries said a signalling problem was preventing trains running through Swindon and journey times would be extended by up to an hour. Services running through Bath Spa between London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads are being diverted through Westbury. And services between London Paddington and Cardiff Central/Swansea are going through Kemple with an additional stop at Gloucester. First Great Western said engineers were on route to deal with the problem. Trains were still running late as the evening wore on with the 20.30 to Bristol Temple Meads also being cancelled. The 17.00 was said to be running more than 21/2 hours late.
Bath Chronicle reporter Siobhan Stayt was outside the station and captured the scenes. Passengers took to social media to described conditions on the trains still running.
