Gary Gold delighted by Bath Rugby's ability to adapt

Director of rugby Gary Gold is hugely encouraged by Bath Rugby's ability to win games despite having to adapt their style of play. The club have attempted to adopt a more adventurous game plan this season by getting their new-look back-line running with ball in hand. Weather conditions have largely held them back so far this term, with the majority of Bath's matches played in foul weather. Those conditions have meant Bath's excellent pack have frequently come to the fore instead. Sunday's LV= Cup clash at home to Exeter Chiefs, however, finally gave the backs the chance to shine. They showed signs of real promise and troubled the visitors' defence all afternoon. "We've been training ourselves to be able to go out and score tries and have a few strings to our bow, but we need to be sensible about it," said Gold. "When it's absolutely gushing it down in Sale on a Friday night, it's probably not the wisest time to be trying to do that from your own 22. "But it was a great day at the weekend and a day when we wanted to move the ball around. I think we did that quite effectively. "It's one of the many attributes of the real good teams. "Leicester over the years, Saracens over the years, when Quins won the championship, they had that amongst a lot of other things. "As well as a really good goal kicker and an outstanding defence, they had an ability to play a variation of game on the day and use the conditions to their advantage." Sunday's victory was Bath's sixth on the bounce in all competitions but Gold says it is crucial that no one gets ahead of themselves. The former South Africa assistant boss added that the team is solely focussed on maintaining that form in this weekend's Aviva Premiership clash away at Wasps. "We are excited about where we are but we know that the more you are winning the more pressure there is for the next game to continue to repeat that kind of form," said Gold. "The last game is well and truly gone and we are 100 per cent focussing on Wasps at the moment. "I think it's really important for us to have the mind-set that we don't celebrate the victories too long and, unfortunately when we do lose, we don't commiserate for too long."
