An exhibition at Hilton Fine Art in Margaret's Buildings, Bath brings together two artists who are strongly inspired by the same experiences of engaging with nature.
The show, which features the work of Angela Charles and Rebecca McLynn and which opens in mid October, is a powerful and emotional response to feelings about nature through contemporary painting.
Angela Charles' paintings are inspired by her surroundings, predominantely the land and sea between her home in South Somerset and the Dorset coast.
Working from quick pen sketches bought back to her studio she begins to work on her memory of the place and her feelings whilst there, rather than a direct representation of the landscape.
Her paintings are then subjected to her incisive mark making, either by adding to the surface with pencil or taking away with other tools.
Rebecca McLynn is interested in wild nature and travels to remoter, unspoilt locations, both inland and coastal, to collect and record detail. Inspired by aspects of nature and the power that wild locations and un-tamed weather has over the emotions and feeling of wellbeing.
The paintings capture the experience of landscape. The final piece being a balance between recognisable features and a capturing, distilling of the elemental conditions experienced. Colour and texture is key and time is spent mixing pigments, oils and waxes to achieve exactly the right colour, tone and surface.
