Online publisher Select-Science marks great year

It has been a year to remember for online publisher Select-Science.

The Corston-based company has celebrated 15 years of connecting the world's science community. Its website reports breakthroughs, raises issues, shares ideas and encourages debate with expert-led scientific reviews.

The media firm founded by Louise and Arif Butt, which employs 25 staff, almost all scientists, has recently moved to larger offices as it continues to grow, but the icing on the cake came earlier this year when it was awarded its first Queen's Award for Enterprise.

Last week the 15-year-old company held its own reception at its new offices to celebrate its 2013 achievements.

Mr Butt said: "We are one of the oldest online publishers in the world."

He said that after such a busy year there was still much for the publication to do.

"We really want to show that science is part of everyday life – lots of people take it for granted. We also want to act as a bit of a communicator; scientists should do more to communicate.

"They need to do more if they are going to get help in finding cures for disease. A government will not always feel inclined to give money to research unless it understands.

"We are being propelled as a publication to really carry the views of scientists and help them communicate effectively."
