Royal Victoria Park's new bench is dedicated Anglo-Catholic Church

A new bench has been dedicated in a Bath park to remember a city church.

The Diocese of Bath and Wells is in the process of officially sanctioning the closure of Holy Trinity Church off Queen Square.

The bench in Royal Victoria Park is dedicated to past priests. benefactors and parishioners of the Anglo-Catholic Church on the corner of Chapel Row and Monmouth Place.

Led by the Venerable Andy Piggott, the Archdeacon of Bath and Wells, and Rural Dean Martin Lloyd Williams, the blessing was attended by the Mayor of Bath Councillor Malcolm Lees.

The dedication was followed by a cream tea on the lawn outside the Royal Victoria Park cafe.

There was particular mention of Father Bill Portnall, who was priest at the church before his death in 1990.

Church-goers say Father Bill kept a "near enough open house" at Holy Trinity until his death.

His daughter Tess said she hoped the simple act of a commemorative bench for the church, which was closed in 2011, would be a permanent place of meeting and contemplation for parishioners.
