An organisation which arranges for volunteers to go and help at schools across Bath and north east Somerset is appealing for more people to get involved.

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme (RSVP) finds school placements for older people who want to give something back to the community.

Angela Wood, who lives in Belgrave Crescent and is a retired social worker, has been listening to children read at St Saviour's Infant School for the past year.

The 65-year-old grandmother-of-two said: "It is really rewarding to introduce children to the whole world of reading.

"I feel very privileged to be coming into a school, which has such a happy environment, and to see the progress the children are making.

"It is nice to be part of that and to give something back to my local community."

The volunteers receive training before they are placed with a school, so do not need any prior experience.

Joan Whitehead, who is the RSVP school placement organiser for B&NES, said there was a wide range of ways people could help at local schools.

She said: "Several schools are currently looking for help with gardening, environmental projects, music and drama.

"There is therefore a lot of scope for volunteers and the time commitment is always negotiable with the school."

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or are a primary or secondary school wanting to get involved contact joan.whitehead@rsvp- west.org or phone 0117 9224392.
