Author Eileen Younghusband, 91, wins award for book about war years in and around Bath

A 91-year-old woman has won a national literary prize for her book about her war years spent in and around Bath.

Author Eileen Younghusband was last week named winner of The People's Book Prize non-fiction 2012/2013 category.

Published by Candy Jar Books, One Woman's War tells the story of the role of women in secret work during the war.

Eileen worked in the unerground Bath Filter Room in Wiltshire, calculating the targets of the Luftwaffe's bombing fleets from information supplied by Britain's pioneering Radar network.

The book reveals the truth about women, barely out of their teens, who were employed for this critical job because they were quicker than men.

They were given an awesome responsibility, working against the clock, knowing that their cool head and proficiency at maths could make a life or death difference.

Last week also saw Eileen attending a Buckingham Palace garden party to receive her British Empire Medal.
