Lower Swainswick life-saver wins St John Ambulance's highest honour

He's only 23, but tireless first-aider Craig Wilkins has already devoted a decade to saving lives.

The St John Ambulance volunteer from Lower Swainswick has received one of the organisation's highest honours after putting in more than 1,300 hours of service last year alone.

Craig, who was presented with the Prior's Commendation and is now also a trained paramedic, became a St John's cadet after seeing a woman fall over in the city centre.

"Although she wasn't badly hurt, I was struck by everyone's lost faces.

"No one knew if they should move her or not, or what to do with her minor wounds, which I thought was mad, so I joined up."

Since then he has looked after a patient who had severed his radial artery and was suffering potentially life-threatening blood loss after his arm had gone through plate glass.

And he has used his life saving skills when not on duty, too, dealing with road accidents, people who have collapsed in the street and helping neighbours.

"My neighbour knew that I was in St John Ambulance and sent her son around to say she had cut herself badly while washing up," he said.

"I was able to clean and cover the wound and get her to hospital in a taxi, as the most appropriate transport, rather than an ambulance. She now has full use of the hand again."

His years of putting first aid into practice as a volunteer have now led Craig to a career with the mainstream NHS ambulance service.

He added: "My experiences and understanding definitely helped me get into university to study to become a paramedic and, in my job, I have successfully resuscitated people, delivered babies and dealt with life-threatening illness and injury."

In his St John Ambulance career, Craig has gone from being a cadet to managing units of young people, while also organising duties, residential weekends and competitions.

The charity's district manager, Karen Brooks praised his commitment.

She said: "Craig has been given this award in recognition of the contribution he has made to his community.

"He has shown true commitment to helping St John Ambulance's life-saving work."
