Craig Meschede paid tribute to the "brilliant" Max Waller after their 43-run partnership in 4.1 overs took Somerset to a thrilling YB40 victory over Glamorgan at Taunton.
Somerset's No 8 and 9 batsmen came together with their team on 203-7, still needing another 43 runs from 5.5 overs after a game that had twisted and turned appeared to be going Glamorgan's way.
But Meschede and Waller both recorded career-best List A scores to give Somerset a three-wicket victory.
Every run was applauded and every boundary cheered as they inched closer to their target, with Meschede eventually finishing on 40 not out from 23 balls and Waller – who hit the winning four – ending on 25 not out from 19 deliveries.
And Meschede said that Waller – who has been borrowing skipper Marcus Trescothick's bats – would not be handing the match-winning willow back to the captain after his late heroics.
"Max was brilliant," said man of the match Meschede. "I couldn't have done it without him – he kept his calm and was brilliant. He keeps telling Tres: 'you've lost this bat – you're not getting it back now!'
"It was a key partnership – it was a massive partnership and it decided the game. It certainly shows we have a lot of depth in our batting and that we can do that and finish things off."
After a high-scoring defeat at Leicestershire seven days earlier, Somerset can return to the top of Group C with a win at Middlesex tomorrow evening.
