A Hindu street festival, which has been celebrated in India for almost 5,000 years, has taken place in Bath. Ratha Yatra is the festival of chariots and sees models of Lord Jagannath, his sister Subhadra and elder brother Balabhadra, paraded through the streets. The event in Bath started in Midland Road, before the group made its way around the city centre and then back to Royal Victoria Park for a celebration with refreshments. One of the organisers Susmita Rajhansha, who lives in Wells Road, said people had come from as far afield as Manchester and London to take part. She said: "Everyone has brought some items of food so when we finish in the park we can all get together and hopefully others will join us to talk about what we are doing." There are around 400 Hindus living in Bath and north east Somerset, but many of them worship at home or travel to Bristol because there is not a temple in the area. A project has been launched to find a suitable location in the city and Mrs Rajhansha said that would allow them to socialise and get together instead of celebrating their religion at home. Councillor Nathan Hartley (Lib Dem, Peasedown) is helping with that search and was also involved with the organisation of the festival. He said: "The Hindu population is one which is growing in Bath, partly because of the university students, and at the moment a lot of them worship at home. "This festival is really significant for Bath because it is one of only 20 cities across Europe to host it." Anyone who would like to get involved with the search for a new temple or anyone who has a suitable property should contact Mr Hartley on 07737 192156 or email nathan_hartley@bathnes.gov.uk.
