The harmful effects of loud music are on show in an innovative display in Wiltshire this week. As part of Noise Action Week a dummy head is showing how headphone volume can affect hearing as part of a special display at County Hall, Trowbridge. Visitors are invited to turn on headphones at the usual volume they use to listen to music and are then asked to transfer them to the artificial head. It shows what the decibel level of the sound is and what impact it would have on hearing. There is also a reminder of the action taken to deal with noise pollution with a display of confiscated electronics including speakers and large TVs. Keith Humphries, cabinet member for public health and protection, said: "Noise from domestic entertainment, such as stereos, radios and televisions, is the biggest cause of complaints between neighbours. "It is behaviour which can cause distress, loss of sleep and even illness. "It can drive people to despair but people do not need to endure this and our teams do take action where necessary." Corporate director Maggie Rae said: "Noise levels can affect hearing and cause deafness in some cases. "Visitors will be able to use interactive equipment at County Hall, showing how decibel levels can affect hearing, and we hope people will think twice about volume levels when listening to music in this way."
