Singer Stevie-Jo Dooley from Bath in national battle of the bands final

An 18-year-old singer from Bath is hoping to bring the House down later this month. Talented Stevie-Jo Dooley, from Lansdown, has been named one of the finalists in the Parliamentary music competition Rock the House 2013. The singer-songwriter is one of nine finalists in the under-19s best band section of the live battle of the bands which takes place at the Bedford in Balham in London on May 28. City MP Don Foster encouraged local talent to enter the contest, which is run in association with Yamaha. The winners will win the opportunity to play live at the Houses of Parliament. The competition received more than 1,000 entries from more than 430 constituencies, with both MPs and a judging panel made up of international music industry experts involved in selecting the finalists. Stevie-Jo said: "It feels great to be selected for the live final and knowing that people are showing an interest in our music. It's great that Rock the House recognises the importance of young talent and gives bands like ourselves a platform to perform and showcase what we can do." Stevie-Jo, who has been playing music since the age of six and learned the double bass at seven, released her debut EP, Brainwave in December, and is about to release a second one. She has been described as "a real breath of fresh air" by singer Midge Ure, who lives near Bath. She will appear with Beth Stenning, 18; Ellie Frank, 18; and Jas Kayser, 17. Founder of Rock the House, MP Mike Weatherley, said: "All the finalists have done incredibly well to make it this final stage, they should all be proud of their achievement. "Rock the House is a popular democratic vehicle through which our vibrant British music scene calls upon its legislators to protect its future and increase awareness of its issues. I wish all the entrants the best of luck for the final." In 2011, the competition was part of a campaign involving Mr Foster which successfully persuaded the Government that venues with a capacity of 200 people should no longer need a licence for live music.
