Peregrine falcon chicks hatch on Bath church roof

A pair of baby peregrine falcons have hatched high on a city church.

The eggs were two of four laid in a nesting box at St John's Catholic Church in South Parade in April.

The two chicks appeared at the end of last week and have been seen feeding via a special webcam in the box, but the remaining eggs are yet to hatch.

Peregrines have been coming to Bath for more than ten years.

In 2005 the Hawk and Owl Trust charity built a nest platform to encourage breeding.

It is believed the birds have been attracted to the city away from their traditional nesting grounds of coastal cliffs because of its tall buildings and churches, and a plentiful food supply of feral pigeons.

More information on the Bath Peregrine Project and updates on the chicks can be found at www.upp.hawkandowl.org/.
