First pledges to review bus fares in Bath

Dominant operator First Group has agreed to review its fares in Bath. The firm is in the midst of a review in Bristol, prompted by a petition campaign involving thousands of passengers. The campaigner who led the Bristol call, graphic designer Daniel Farr, has recently set up a web petition for Bath. But the firm's pledge to look at its fares in the city also follows pressure from an expert panel set up by a councillor earlier this year. There have been claims that First's fares in the Bath area are among the highest in the country. The firm has now told Councillor Roger Symonds, who is about to step down as Bath and North East Somerset Council's cabinet member for transport, that it will review its prices once its exercise in Bristol is complete. The company has launched a 32-question questionnaire asking for details of people's bus usage in Bristol, and seeking views on its pricing structure. It says its Bath review will cover all First bus services originating, terminating or passing through Bath. Mr Symonds set up the Bath and North East Somerset Bus Expert Improvement Panel, which is chaired by London transport commissioner Sir Peter Hendy, who lives in Widcombe. It has told First that the two of the issues that it wants to see addressed in Bath and North East Somerset are punctuality and fares. In return, First has told the panel – which brings together First with representatives of organisations such as the University of Bath and the Royal United Hospital, as well as the Bath Bus Users Group - that it wants bus lanes in the city extended. Mr Symonds said: "This move by First, which was promised verbally some months ago, has now been confirmed. Punctuality is being addressed too, with the Dorchester Street restrictions the main focus. The companies have also told the panel that they would like the London Road bus lane extended to the Batheaston roundabout, an outgoing bus lane on Wellsway and improvements to junctions on Lower Bristol Road. I am confident that the panel will continue to advise and challenge the council and the bus companies to get better bus services. This fares review by First is an early success for the panel." First introduced seven new single-deck buses for Service 13 in Bath in December and eight brand new hybrid double-deckers for the Bath Park and Ride system in October.
