Bid to thwart Dorchester Street bus gate is defeated

Plans to create a new bus gate on Dorchester Street have been given the go-ahead all over again. Conservative councillors had called on Bath and North East Somerset Council to rethink plans for a new eastbound bus lane, raising concerns over the amount of traffic which would be displaced onto nearby roads. However at a meeting of the authority's Planning, Transport and Environment scrutiny committee councillors voted not to ask the ruling cabinet to reconsider its plans. This means that the cabinet can now go ahead with the plans, which would see the new bus lane in use between 10am and 6pm each day for an 18-month trial period. Conservatives were disappointed with the result, saying that the new bus gate would add to traffic on the already congested A36 through Widcombe, while producing little benefit for pedestrians and cyclists using Dorchester Street. The ruling Lib Dems argue that the new restriction will help speed up public transport.
