Masked raiders threatened staff at a pizza takeaway in Keynsham with a screwdriver as they demanded money from the safe.
The gang of four men, who all had their faces covered, walked into the Domino's in Ashmead Road at around 11.30pm last Thursday night.
They threatened staff with a screwdriver and punched one man in the face a number of times, as they told him to open the safe and give them all the takings.
When he told them that he could not open it, they instead stole his mobile phone and fled the scene.
A Domino's spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that our store in Keynsham was subject to an attempted robbery on Thursday night.
"Once the robbers realised the safe operated on a time delay system, they just grabbed a mobile phone and ran.
"Sadly, one team member was assaulted during the attack. He is shaken by the incident, but is thankfully recovering well.
"The incident was captured on CCTV and this has been passed to the police, who we are working with to ensure those responsible for this crime are apprehended."
Police are now investigating and have asked for any witnesses to come forward and contact them on the non-emergency number 101.
