Nick Blofeld: Somerset CCC cancellation highlights need for redeveloped Rec

Bath Rugby chief executive Nick Blofeld says Somerset CCC's decision to cancel their annual visit to The Rec in 2013 highlights the need for a redevelopment of the venue. The Cidermen announced last month that they would host their YB40 match with Yorkshire Vikings in Bath on August 15 but "significant concerns" over the pitch mean that the fixture will take place at Taunton instead. Somerset have played matches in the city for more than a century but were also forced to cancel last year's fixture after a wet summer prevented groundstaff from preparing a pitch, part of which is used for Premiership rugby for nine months of the year. Blofeld said: "We are also disappointed that Somerset CCC have taken this decision but also understand why," said Blofeld. "This demonstrates the ongoing need to improve facilities at The Rec to ensure it can operate better as a multi-sport venue, for both professional and amateur events. "We are talking to the cricket club and think we have a plan that can work for next year and long-term."
