Police have been given more time to question two men arrested after a stabbing in the centre of Bath.
An Avon and Somerset Police spokeswoman confirmed officers had successfully requested a custody extension, meaning the pair could be held until tomorrow afternoon.
The top half of Gay Street was closed for much of yesterday after a man was found with stab wounds.
The street was cordoned off from its junction with George Street up to The Circus, after the man in his 20s was found with serious stab wounds to his chest in the early hours of the morning.Police were called to the scene at 2am and the man was taken to the Royal United Hospital by the South Western Ambulance Service where he underwent surgery.
He is now out of surgery and in a serious but not life threatening condition. It is understood he could have been stabbed as many as seven times.
Police have made an appeal for witnesses.
A spokesman said: "At this stage we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident. However, we would like to speak to witnesses about the assault."
Anyone with information should contact Bath CID on 101 or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
