Batheaston homeowner talks about the moment he found an unexploded World War Two bomb in his garden

The homeowner at the centre of a bomb scare in Batheaston yesterday has described how he only discovered the device by accident. Clive Jones, a bricklaying contractor, said he was digging foundations for a new store room extension at his home on Morris Lane with colleague Shaun Nicholls, when the pair made the discovery. Mr Jones, 50, said: "We were just digging up and we came across a metal tube. We pulled it up and thought, what's that? We thought it could be a bomb so we phoned the Police. "That was it the Police turned up, then the bomb squad turned up about 4pm." He added: "At quarter past one when we rang they told us to sit in the van, and then they told us to move further and further away until about 5pm." As well as the bomb the two men also found a small metal tin full of old bullets. Mr Jones said he has lived in the house three years and despite digging up most of the garden to lay a patio had not come across any other bombs or items of interest. Police cordoned off Morris Lane for several hours yesterday afternoon after they received a call from a member of the public about the discovery of what was thought to be an unexploded Second World War mortar shell in a garden. An army bomb disposal team was called to deal with the device and it was taken away.
