Bath cancer surviver calls on city to take part in Race for Life

A Bath woman who survived cancer in her twenties is encouraging people across Bath to take a stand against the disease by taking part in the Race for Life.

Tina Angell, from Odd Down, was diagnosed with bowel cancer at the age of just 24.

She went on to get the all-clear and is now using her new lease of life to show her support for Cancer Research UK.

Tina, who is now 33, said: "I was left undiagnosed for over a year-and-a-half because people 'that age' don't get bowel cancer.

"My symptoms started when my son was nine months old, it was put down to the fact that I'd had what was classed as a traumatic delivery with him.

"I was told it was probably irritable bowel syndrome and given different tablets to try, of course nothing worked and my health deteriorated.

"I had no appetite, I was losing weight and went down to seven-and-a-half stone from around 11-and-a-half.

"I was constantly having tummy pains and the tiredness totally took over."

After eventually being diagnosed with cancer she underwent successful treatment.

Tina said: "It was a terrible shock when I was diagnosed with cancer, I just couldn't believe it was happening to me.

"They explained that I would have two chemotherapy drugs and once I had recovered from that they would operate and reverse the colostomy I was given. I was in hospital for four weeks, and what followed was five months of chemotherapy.

"Once that had finished and my blood levels had returned to normal I had the colostomy reversal and have fortunately been all clear since."

She added: "I'm very grateful for the treatment I've had, Cancer Research UK's work is at the heart of the progress that has been made in research."

Tina will be volunteering at this year's Race for Life, which takes place on Sunday, June 16, at the University of Bath.
