Amazing labyrinth of light opens at Holburne Museum

Visitors to the Holburne Museum will get to explore a light labyrinth this Christmas.

From this week, the light installation, created by Martin Richman and Charlie Kerr, will be open to everyone in the back gardens at the museum. Visitors will be able to walk through strands of different coloured light in a web-like maze of light and sound.

Award-winning artist Martin Richman, whose previous work includes Bristol Bridge and London 2012, said the initiative reflected the Great Pulteney Street landmark's history.

"The museum was once a hotel that led into adjacent 18th-century pleasure gardens which were frequented by patrons who enjoyed grottos, illuminations, a labyrinth and perhaps a saucy dalliance in the protective shadows," said Mr Richman.

"We hope to create an engaging visual and aural experience for all ages to participate within, which will engender echoes of history and place, providing an engaging, transformative experience of the garden of the Holburne."

The installation is being sponsored by architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and Bath law firm Mogers.

Alexander Sturgis, director of the Holburne, said: "We are delighted to be able to bring lights back to our garden this Christmas and offer our visitors this beautiful artwork following on from last year's Field of Light. This year there is the added enticement of being able to lose yourself amidst the glowing threads and evocative sounds of the installation."

The labyrinth will be open daily until January 9. It will be closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

Bruce Munro, who created the museum's Field of Light installation, has this year produced artwork for the Royal United Hospital.
