Love really is in the air for romantic couples at abbey

Love has been literally in the air at Bath Abbey after five proposals in the past eight weeks in the landmark church's tower.

Couples can now upgrade from the church's regular tower tours giving a behind-the-scenes tour of the building to a private tour just for two. In addition to usual tour highlights which include sitting behind the abbey clockface, chiming the abbey bells and standing on top of the vaulted ceiling, visitors on the Romantic Tower Tour will be accompanied by their own tour guide and get to enjoy the views from the top while sampling glasses of bubbly.

Tower tour manager Joe Reynolds said: "In the past eight weeks, we've had at least five proposals on the top of the tower and one outside the abbey, so there's no doubt romance is in the air. You'll always remember where you were when you decided to share a life together, so why not choose a spot that's pretty, private and unique? You'll also be adding to the abbey's 1,000 year-old history."

Merlyn Stracey, a visitor from London whose fiancé Jon popped the question while they were on such a tour, said: "We were really enjoying the tour. Our guide was great, very informative and interesting. We got to the top of the tower and all of a sudden, Jon proposed. I was in complete shock as it was totally unexpected."

To book a tour, contact Joe on 01225 303310 or email towertours@bathabbey.org.

Prices start from £100 per couple depending on timings and availability.
