Customers and staff at local Vauxhall main dealer, Saltford Motor Services, were given the opportunity to see Vauxhall's latest star car last weekend before its official launch next month.

Visitors to the showroom were able to view and test drive the all-new Vauxhall ADAM city car at a special event on Saturday and Sunday, during which they were served refreshments and given as much information as possible on Vauxhall's impressive new baby.

Open to everyone, from past and present customers to anyone interested in finding out more, the Vauxhall ADAM Preview weekend was very well intended and plenty of people took test drives in the new ADAM, a city car with real attitude.

Saltford Motor Services' sales manager, Mark Thomas, says: "The amount of interest that we have had in the ADAM has been astounding and our preview weekend proved very popular indeed. After visitors had taken test drives we received a number of orders for this new model which, we believe, is going to be a smash hit with car buyers looking to lower motoring costs without compromising on driving pleasure and style."

Yes, you did read the name correctly. It's called an ADAM. Why? Well, it's an Opel thing. Vauxhall's sister brand in Germany flexed the corporate muscles a bit and insisted the car would be named after Adam Opel, the company's founder.

Vauxhall's new model may carry an odd name but it's a very interesting small car which punts Vauxhall straight into the style-led city car sector. Very fashionable, it's striking to look at, both inside and out and includes some features yet to be seen in this segment.

The cabin of the ADAM is, if anything, even bolder than the exterior. There's extensive use of body-coloured trim inserts on the dashboard, along the centre console and onto the steering wheel. It all gives the interior a real riotous personality. A seven-inch touch screen interface is the big point of interest from a technological perspective. It's both iPhone and Android compatible, and can access internet-downloaded apps

The ADAM is offered with three trim levels, JAM (fashionable/colourful), GLAM (elegant/sophisticated) and SLAM (racy/sporty). The latest generation ESP system is standard on all models and it also includes a Hill Start Assist function. Where specified, the navigation and infotainment controls are all marshalled by the touch screen. There's even a choice of headlining, including an LED-lit starlight roof trim.

The ADAM is offered with a choice of three ecoFLEX four-cylinder petrol engines from launch, a 1.2-litre 70PS, plus two 1.4-litre engines with either 87PS or 100PS.

All are mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. As you'd expect, the ADAM's economy and emissions figures are outstanding.

You can expect well over 50mpg on the combined cycle and close to 120g/km of CO2 even from the pokey 100PS 1.4-litre petrol variant. Its insurance ratings and residual values both look good too. In other words, whichever model you opt for, the day to day running costs will never be cause you concern.

■ The new ADAM arrives at Saltford Motor Services Ltd, 491 Bath Road in Saltford (BS31 3HQ) this March, so be sure to look out for Vauxhall's desirable brand new baby coming soon! Call (01225) 873172 for more information.
