Worshippers' donations to ensure equality

Church-goers across the Diocese of Bath and Wells have increased the amount they put in the collection plate for the common good.

The Diocese of Bath and Wells had one of the highest collection rates in the country in 2011 and figures for last year look like hitting 98.5 per cent of the sum requested by the diocesan Common Fund. The Parish Share money is paid by each of the 496 parishes into the diocesan fund.

The diocese shares out these contributions fairly, so that whether a parish is rich or poor, its ministry work is safeguarded and the priest is paid the same as any other clergyman or woman in that role.

Diocesan Secretary Nick Denison said: "It's about every parish seeing itself as part of this big picture."
