Child comes of age to qualify for European Indoor Championships

Eilidh Child powered to her first national indoor title in Sheffield at the weekend to book a place at next month's European Championships in Gothenburg. The 25-year-old – a member of Malcolm Arnold's hurdles group at the University of Bath – left her rivals trailing on the flat over 400m at the European Trials & UK Indoor Championships at Sheffield. Her triumph on Sunday came 24 hours after she clocked 52.06secs in the semis to set a new Scottish record and move up to third in the world rankings. Fellow Bath hurdler Andy Pozzi won his 60m hurdles heat in 7.62secs but had to withdraw from the final due to injury, later describing the move as a "precaution". Team Bath AC teenager Loren Bleaken finished a disappointing third in her heat of the 800m in a time of 2mins 10.08secs and did not progress into the final. Hannah Grubb retained her Midland Counties Indoor title when she won the under-20s women's pole vault last weekend. On this occasion the 17-year-old Team Bath athlete found 3.40m was enough for gold, whereas a year ago Grubb cleared 3.67 to win the same title. It was Grubb's second title this winter following her success in the South West Championships. There was also a silver medal for fellow club pole vaulter Nikko Hunt in the under-17 men's age group. Sprinter Abi Davies, 17, matched that in the under-20 women's 60m, equalling her personal best of 7.87secs in the heats. Livia Gauntlett , now competing in the under-17 women's age group, she struck bronze in the 60m hurdles with a personal best of 9.10. That was the fastest time by a West athlete this winter. Sprinter Zoe Mattacks won her first regional medal by finishing third in the under-15 girls' 60m in 8.21 and Laura Smith was fifth in the under-20 women's 400m in 61.86. Robert and John Howorth came fourth and fifth in the 300m in 42.51 and 42.70 respectively, while brother Rory competed in the under-13 boys' quadrathlon and scored 968 points for seventh place. Club-mate Tyscho Adams was 22nd on 207.
