A second haulage firm has been fined for breaching the weight limit on Bradford on Avon's historic Town Bridge. The prosecution is the latest to be brought as a result of the efforts of volunteers in the town's LorryWatch scheme. The firm pleaded guilty to the charge of using a 44-tonne vehicle to cross the bridge – breaching the 18-tonne weight restriction. It was fined £600 and ordered to pay £75 costs to Wiltshire Council. The scheme, which started last year, sees volunteers working with Bradford on Avon Council and Wiltshire Council to monitor vehicles infringing the weight limit on the bridge. Keith Humphries, Wiltshire Council cabinet member for public health and protection services, said: "This is another great result for the scheme and I thank the volunteers for their efforts. Since the campaign started the numbers of lorries crossing the bridge illegally has dropped. "We hope this action will send a very clear message to haulage companies and drivers." Dick Tonge, cabinet member for highways and transport said: "We are grateful once again to the diligent volunteers who have helped us chart this problem on this bridge. This is an excellent example of a community working together and solving local issues." Lorry Watch co-ordinator Stephanie Ridout, added: "We in Lorry Watch are hopeful that this second prosecution will send out a clear message to haulage firms that to cross the bridge and contravene the weight limit will not be tolerated. All companies have a warning the first time they break the law, that if they choose to disregard that, they will be prosecuted." In September, a firm was ordered to pay a £500 fine together with £125 costs for exceeding the weight limit.
