Keynsham 10k road race cancelled due to escalating costs

The 2013 Keynsham 10k road race, organised by 1st Keynsham Scout Group and scheduled for the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May, has been cancelled. "Unfortunately, the cost of putting on the event has escalated to a point where the effort needed to organise it has exceeded the benefit that can be gained," said a statement from the organisers. "The departure of Cadbury's from the town has resulted in uncertainty on availability and costs of using Somerdale, and the position of licensing is unclear. Also, clashes with other events at Somerdale has made it difficult to guarantee a safe exit from the site for runners. "Sponsorship from Keynsham Hearing Centre helped to keep the 2012 race going but even that is insufficient for 2013. This is a great disappointment for the Scout Group who rely on fundraising events to keep active Scouting going." The fourth race in the Pomphrey Sports 5k winter series in Warmley takes place on Tuesday night, with details atwww.bristolandwestac.org.uk. Meanwhile, the 2013 Wiltshire Road Race League will get underway with the Longleat 10k on Sunday, February 3 (www.209events.com/). Entries are also being taken for the Wiltshire ten-mile road race in Melksham on Sunday, February 10 (www.stampedesports.co.uk/), an event in which Team Bath's Holly Rush is the defending women's champion. The Bridgwater 10k on Sunday, April 14 lunches a new series of road races and triathlons in Devon, Dorset and Somerset. For further details see the website at: www.160.org.uk
