Knee injury blow for Freddie Burns ahead of Six Nations

Gloucester hope Freddie Burns' left knee injury is merely a recurrence of a problem suffered in pre-season. The former Beechen Cliff schoolboy limped out of Saturday's 36-16 Mont de Marsan victory after just 12 minutes, after suffering a medial knee ligament strain. Burns, 22, suffered damage to the same knee in pre-season that proved nothing too serious, and Gloucester boss Nigel Davies hopes this latest blow ends up the same. The fly-half's involvement in England's RBS 6 Nations opener against Scotland on February 2 is now in doubt, although he was due to link up with Stuart Lancaster's squad in Leeds today. Davies explained: "Freddie has a problem with the medial ligament in his left knee, similar to what he had in pre-season. "That kept him out for about three weeks then, and fingers crossed this won't be any worse than that. "But we'll have to keep assessing that to see how he holds up. "He'll link up with the England camp as planned."
