South African wines are going from strength to strength at the moment, and this worthy winner of a prized decanter gold medal is a classic example of the quality and value that the country is now producing. It's a full-flavoured, super-juicy style of dry white, packed with ripe melon, nectarine and yellow plum fruit, with a delicious fruity, crisp and citrusy finish. Great for this time of year, with Moroccan tagines, gammon steaks and duck in a fruity sauce.

AEMILIA SHIRAZ/VRANAC/PETIT VERDOT 2013, MACEDONIA (Waitrose £8.99, down to £6.99 until October 28)
I love discovering unusual wines and this will be a new one for most of you. I found this little gem last week. There aren't many Macedonian wines on the shelves right now (for those who may wonder, Macedonia is nestled in between Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia and Albania) – try this one, which has just landed at Waitrose. It's big, rich, and soft, full of mulberry and black cherry flavours – no harsh edges, and a velvety finish – perfect with midweek pasta dishes, cottage pie, or casseroles.

MONTAGNY PREMIER CRU 'LES MILLIERES' 2010 (Majestic £12.99, down to £9.74 when you buy any mixed six bottles)
If you're a lover of white Burgundy, this is worth a go. I've always been a fan of good Montagny – far better value than many of the better known Burgundies; it's rich, warm, and smooth, yet with a lively freshness. Full of aromas and flavours of baked apples, ripe pears and a touch of honey, it's an elegant treat with baked salmon, or roast chicken this weekend.

LEYDA PINOT NOIR LAS BRISAS 2012 (Great Western Wine £13.50 down to £11.88 until the end of October)
A very stylish Pinot Noir from Chile will bring style and elegance to the weekend, especially if paired with roast pheasant, duck, or anything spicy. It's a soft, supple style of red, bursting with bright raspberry fruit, with a velvety opulence and silky smoothness
