Bath Approach Golf Club: Dave Ferebee lifts seniors' Plate after victory over Terry Selway

Plate semi-final

Dave Ferebee recalled former glories with a brilliant round of one under par, the best round of the season, to reach the final at the expense of Dennis Crombie who played near his best to no avail. Ferebee won the first three holes and, although Crombie won the next two, Ferebee regained his three hole lead by the turn. Crombie fought hard on the back nine parring the first seven holes but so did Ferebee who completed his win with two holes remaining.

Ferebee went on to win the trophy after having to recover from three down and eventually defeating an unlucky Terry Selway after three extra holes. Selway playing much better than of late held the inform Ferebee to three all at the turn. Selway then rocked Ferebee back onto his heels by winning the first three holes back but the old master dug in winning three of the next four holes to draw level before winning the match in extra time..

League Cup semi-finals

Colin Gamlin avenged his league defeat at the hands of Nick Parker with a victory that takes him into the final. Parker took an early lead but a run of pars helped to put Gamlin ahead at the turn and coming back Gamlin extended his lead to three before closing out the match with two holes to play.

Brian Wickham fought his way into the final but required his best round for twelve months to overcome the valiant Brian Allen who completed his round in four under net par. Wickham dropped only one shot on the front nine but Allen came from two down to level at three all by the turn Coming back Wickham broke the deadlock by re-taking the lead with four holes remaining and confirmed victory with one hole to play.

League Division 1

Bernard Roots's defeat of current leader Reg Morris leaves him requiring just one point from his two remaining matches to take the title after illness had delayed his start to the season until the end of August. The front nine were keenly contested with Morris winning the ninth to take the lead but at the start of the back nine Morris faltered and Roots made the decisive break winning three holes in a row. Morris halved the deficit with four holes remaining but Roots held on to ensure victory on the final hole.

Alasdair Campbell consolidated his position in Division One after a close encounter with Brian Allen that gave him victory at the last gasp. Allen played very well on the front nine gaining a one hole lead but coming back Campbell had the edge squaring the match on the thirteenth and then, after four halved holes, Campbell won the final hole to take the points.

A great round from veteran Brian Wickham helped him to defeat the previously unbeaten Bernard Roots leaving Roots requiring a draw in his final match to become Champion of Division One. Wickham outplayed Roots over the front nine dropping just one stroke to par to lead by four holes. At the start of the back nine Wickham increased his advantage before Roots stemmed the tide by reducing his deficit to three with three to play but Wickham was not to be denied taking the points with two holes remaining.

League Division 2

Brian Lambern held off a spirited late fight back by Ingrid Doherty to scrape home on the final hole and lift himself above his opponent in the table. Lambern was well in command on the front nine reaching the turn three up. On the back nine he increased his lead to four with five to play only for Doherty to raise her game winning the next four holes to draw level with one to play but a par on the final hole left Lambern the winner.

John Sercombe gained a surprise victory over Nick Parker who had required a point to be the Champion of Division Two. Parker took an early lead but fell away leaving Sercombe to reach two up at the turn Parker upped the pace on the back nine but Sercombe withstood the pressure and in spite of Parker halving the deficit on the penultimate hole with a birdie Sercombe held on for the points. George Thurston maintained his 100% record in group A with a convincing win over Colin Lee. Lee fought well on the front nine restricting Thurston to a one hole lead but coming back Thurston took control winning the first five holes to take the match with four holes to play.

Reg Morris escaped with a narrow win over a tenacious Danny Peel to retain his chance of reaching the quarter finals. The front nine were keenly contested with the turn being reached with the score at four all. Coming back Peel put himself in front with a birdie on the twelfth but Morris replied by winning three in a row to leave him two up with three to play and then secured a half on the sixteenth to take the match.

Stableford

Ann Fear achieved her best round of the season to win the Stableford with 42 points. Lionel Smith and Graham Whatley also played well scoring 39 points each.

Colin Lee shot his best round of the season, 14 strokes better than last week, to win the next Stableford with 42 points. Tony Damon was second with an excellent 38 points with Brian Lambern a creditable third with 35 points

 Secretary's Cup

George Thurston qualified for the quarter finals with a comfortable victory over Brian Woodford who still has a chance of qualifying. Thurston chose to be in his best form on the front nine leaving Woodford all at sea by reaching four up at the turn and , although Woodford took closer order coming back, Thurston won the match on the sixteenth.
