Commonwealth judo champion Megan Fletcher narrowly missed out on a medal at the Astana Grand Prix in Kazakhstan at the weekend but remains upbeat about her podium prospects in her next competition in Uzbekistan.

The under-70kg category fighter fought world-class opposition and had to come through a repechage in the third round to have a chance of winning a medal. She beat Brazilian fighter Maria Portela in that round before going down to German Szaundra Diedrich in the bronze medal match.

Fletcher, who trains at the University of Bath, said: "Fifth is always a disappointing number. I'm hoping there will be a Grand Prix medal for me soon. Bring on next weekend."

Fletcher won gold for England at the Commonwealth Games in July and will be hoping to qualify for next year's World Championships, which are also being held in Astana.
