Letter: The common sense answer to road speed

After listening to numerous suggestions on radio Bristol yesterday morning concerning 20 mph zones in Bath & Bristol, I have come to a common sense and practical answer.

All that needs to be done is for the Government to pass legislation to turn 30mph zones into 20mph zones for rush hour periods only ie. 7.45am to 9.45 and 3pm to 6.30; with the exception of old people's homes, hospitals and any other sensitive areas where 20 mph signs would continue to be displayed.

Such a simple step would make roads safer for everyone, especially children and old folk, save millions on the masses of road markings and signs, stop motorists' frustration with the current nonsensical arrangements and finally make 20mph realistically enforceable due to the limited periods involved (and no one could then have cause for complaint).

Problem solved - everybody happy.
