Asda customers were left shocked after the real price of bunch of £1 bananas was revealed to be little over half that when they were weighed.
Alan Hudson, a shopper at Asda's Tyne and Wear branch, was appalled when he found out the actual value of his fruit was 54p. The YouTube clip of his experiment has now been viewed more than two million times.
"It's disgusting really," Mr Hudson said. "There are millions of people living on the poverty line, trying to reduce the cost of their shopping as much as possible and looking out for bargains. That bag had a bright red sticker on it, saying they were a pound. It makes it look like a bargain, when in fact you're getting ripped off by nearly half".
A spokesperson for Asda said "The majority of bananas we sell are loose which require a little bit of ripening at home and are price locked at 68p per kilo. Our pre-packed bananas are stored for a little longer and have already been ripened so they're perfect to eat as soon as you've bought them, they are then pre-packed by hand, which is why they're slightly more expensive".
This comes just days after fellow supermarket Sainsburys got caught displaying a staff only poster encouraging people to get customers spending more was displayed in full view of the public.
Is Asda's excuse for the pricing confusion good enough or should supermarkets realise that, in light of food banks and massive wealth inequality, they should be selling their goods for a fair price? Let us know in the comments below.
