Avon and Somerset Police to honour fallen officers with parade on Sunday

By Chloe Pope and Ellie Weston

A memorial day is to be held in the Avon and Somerset force area this weekend to honour police officers and staff who lost their lives while serving the community.

A private service will take place on Sunday at police headquarters in Weston-super-Mare, followed by a memorial parade and church service in the town centre which is open to all.

The parade will follow a route starting in Union Street (at the rear of the council house), via Oxford Street, into Walliscote Road, past the police station and on to Clarence Park Baptist Church, where a service will take place.

Many senior officers and representatives from across the constabulary will be attending, including Avon and Somerset's Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens.

"It is important that we take the time to remember and honour those who served their communities, showing our eternal gratefulness for the police men and women who paid the ultimate price while working to keep our communities safe," she said.

"The memorial event is always very emotional and deeply moving and acts as a continuous reminder of the risks officers and staff undertake every time they are on duty."

The public service begins at 3.15pm at the Clarence Park Baptist Church in Weston-super-Mare.
