New energy centre on Midland Road will help to heat more than 800 homes

More than 800 homes in the city are to be heated thanks to a new energy centre.

Crest Nicholson Regeneration has officially opened the first permanent energy centre at Bath Riverside, which will supply low carbon heat and hot water to the residential and commercial space within the development.

The centre, housed in a former Wessex Water Building on Midland Road, burns wood pellets to heat the water, which is then distributed to homes via a network of insulated pipes.

The facility will be operated and maintained by E.ON Community Energy which will ensure residents have round-the-clock access to heat and hot water.

Managing Director of Crest Nicholson Regeneration, Debbie Aplin, said: "The opening of the Energy Centre is a significant milestone in the development of Bath Riverside. We have put a lot of careful consideration into how the development can best meet the sustainability targets set, and it is fantastic that we have been able to use one of the existing buildings for the Energy Centre, retaining an important link to the site's history.

"Working closely with E.ON, we will be able to meet Bath Riverside's energy requirement for many years to come."

The 43-acre Riverside development will eventually include 2,000 homes with apartments and houses, public parks, a school, cafes and restaurants.

Head of community energy at E.ON, Jeremy Bungey, said: "We are delighted to be working with Crest on this superb development.

"E.ON is committed to delivering significant carbon savings through the operation of the district heating system. We believe that Bath Riverside has raised the bar for sustainable development in the region."
