The new series of X Factor returned to ITV last night, starring some talented performers and some more bizarre acts.

Simon Cowell and Cheryl Cole returned to the judging panel and were joined by new judge Mel B and long-time judge Louis Walsh.

Several made it through to the next round of the show.

Sisters Jazzy and Ruby, from Blonde Electric, performed Jessie J's Do It Like A Dude and made it through despite dividing opinion.

Simon Cowell was fascinated by the pair, but Cheryl gave them a no saying it wasn't her cup of tea.

Also through are 16-year-old guitarist Reece Bibby, and youngsters Charlie Jones, Chole O' Gorman and Lauren Platt.

Former contestant Amy Connolly also impressed all four judges with her rendition of With You from Ghost The Musical.

One of the big new stars of the show so far is Chole Jasime, who sang her version of Black Coffee by Ella Fitzgerald.

Simon Cowell said: "You're unusual, a bit kooky, but you've got a cool authentic bluesy throwback voice."

Welsh singer Jay James Picton, a former Royal Navy fitness instructor, gave a passionate performance and was a big hit.

For some performers however, the audition stage of the show was less successful.

Keyboard player Shayden Willis made the wrong impression after he refused to stop performing and had to be unplugged by staff.

Singer Angelina Robinson's mum tried to tempt the judges with cake and Chinese takeaway, but this wasn't enough to get her through.

Vocal coach Mila Falls was also sent home. Simon Cowell said: "You were like somebody a bit drunk at a nightclub."
