South west veterans who braved sub-zero temperatures during the Second World War were honoured by Russia yesterday.

The Russian Embassy invited veterans who had already received the Arctic Convoy Star Medal from the Ministry of Defence to a special ceremony at Wiltshire Council's County Hall in Trowbridge.

They were presented with the Ushakov Medal, a Russian military honour, to recognise their bravery during the conflict.

Roy While, chairman of Wiltshire Council, said: "We are all delighted these men are being recognised again to honour their gallantry.

"It's a source of enormous pride that we have so many of them living in the South West.

"It was a huge privilege to be able to host this special ceremony at County Hall today and welcome so many veterans.

"I've already spoken to a number of the veterans this morning, all over 90 and very keen to be here."

Alexander Kramarenko, a representative of the Russian Embassy, also took the time to address the men at the ceremony.

The Arctic Convoy ships of the Royal and Merchant Navies made repeated perilous journeys to ensure vital supplies of both arms and food supplies reached Russian shores.

This journey was described by Winston Churchill as the worst journey in the world, and many of them lost their lives.

It has taken over 70 years for their efforts to receive proper recognition.
