World Health Organisation suggests tightening e-cigarette regulations

A new report from the World Health Organisation recommends banning e-cigarettes indoors and sales to children.

It claims the vapours emitted from e-cigarettes pose a risk to those nearby and suggests there is little evidence they help smokers to quit. The organisation, part of the United Nations, proposes a ban on adverts selling e-cigarettes as a way to stop smoking.

WHO says there needs to be more scientific evidence to prove the devices help smokers quit. It is also worried about fruity or sweet flavours which could appeal to younger smokers.

Up to 2.1 million people in the UK use e-cigarettes, which allows smokers to inhale nicotine without the side-effects caused by tobacco smoke. However it is still unclear as to whether e-cigarettes do more harm than good.

Some experts are concerned about chemicals in e-cigarettes, but a scientific review looking at 81 studies said e-cigarettes were safer than smoking. Action on Smoking and Health has also said it cannot back any plans to add e-cigarettes to anti-smoking legislation.
