The former head teacher of a Bath teenager who has proved to be one of England's most successful athletes at this summer's Commonwealth Games has praised her talent, hard work and determination.
Champion swimmer Siobhan-Marie O'Connor, who went to St Gregory's Catholic College, has scooped six medals in the pool, including gold in the 200m individual medley.
The 18-year-old, who lives in Bitton, trains at the University of Bath and has long been tipped for stardom, being one of the youngest members of Team GB at the 2012 London Olympics.
And St Gregory's head Raymond Friel, pictured right, said she had always managed to balance her gruelling training schedule with her schoolwork.
He said: "She was very, very disciplined. The training schedule, even as a young girl, was really tough. But her family were very supportive and we worked closely with them so she could manage to balance the training and her schoolwork."
He added: "She was always so modest and unassuming, never giving the impression that she thought she was some kind of big shot. She was just such a nice person and had that quiet determination right from the start."
Mr Friel said everyone at St Gregory's had been excited in the build-up to the Commonwealth Games and was so proud of Siobhan-Marie's success.
"It is just great," he said. "She is such a great example, not just because of her success but showing people how hard you have to work to achieve it.
"Throughout her whole journey she has been a thoroughly nice young woman."
He added that he hoped Siobhan-Marie would be able to pop into St Gregory's once she was back in Bath and show off her haul of medals to students and teachers.
